Is GPA Calculated by Semester, Year, or Cumulatively?
All three exist — they measure different time spans using the same formula.
- Semester GPA: one term only — 15–16 weeks for semester schools, 10–11 weeks for quarter schools. This is what this calculator computes.
- Annual GPA: covers a full academic year (fall + spring combined). Not officially reported at most schools, but useful for personal tracking. Calculate it by combining both semesters' total quality points and total credits.
- Cumulative GPA: every course across your entire academic career — the number on your official transcript.

Official answer: your GPA is reported cumulatively on transcripts, but calculated semester by semester as you progress. Both numbers matter — semester GPA shows your current form; cumulative GPA shows your long-term track record.
What Moves Your Semester GPA Most
- Credit-heavy courses dominate. A 4-credit course has four times the impact of a 1-credit course. An A in a 4-credit core class matters more than an A in a 1-credit elective.
- A failing grade hits hardest in a light semester. Failing a 3-credit course in a 12-credit semester drops your semester GPA by roughly 1.0 full point. In a 15-credit semester, the same F drops it by about 0.8 points.
- Pass/Fail elections don't help. A Pass adds credits but zero grade points — it won't lift your semester GPA. A Fail (F/NP) typically counts as 0.0 and will hurt it.
